Video. Thousands evacuated after Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire erupts

Updated:

The 3,763-metre volcano southwest of Guatemala City is one of the most active in South America.

Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire (Volcán de Fuego) erupted again on Monday, prompting authorities to evacuate nearly 300 families and warn that up to 30,000 people could be at risk.

The eruption sent gas and ash soaring into the sky, leading to the closure of nearby schools and a major road.

Policemen and soldiers have blocked trails to prevent tourists from accessing the area.

The flow of volcanic material is weak to moderate but expected to increase, Guatemala’s disaster agency said early Monday.
